Some experiences quietly reframe the way we see the world. They do not arrive as theories or strategies, but as moments that stay with us, moments that change what we notice, what we value, and what we feel responsible for long after they have passed.
Having been witness to the catastrophic elimination of an ecosystem years in the making, a Category 5 hurricane that swept through the Panhandle on October 10th 2018, would have a profound impact on how we lived our lives going forward.
As we drove through Florida’s forgotten coast, a largely untouched and uninhabited area of coastline, tucked behind the pines of the Apalachicola National Forest, carcasses of trees appeared by the side of the road; miles and miles of tree graves, homes and buildings destroyed, and a community displaced and battered.
Several years later, sitting in a quaint coffee shop called Sibu in Costa Rica’s southern zone, a concept developed, what if we could contribute to one's understanding of humankind’s position within our natural ecosystem; what if we could make others see the value of natural assets and investment in nature itself.
“The fragile can become the strong when they find their purpose”
That experience did not fade with time. It became a reference point, a reminder of how quickly places of immense value can be lost when they are not fully seen or understood. What was revealed was not only the force of nature, but the vulnerability created when systems fail to recognize, measure, and protect what matters before it is too late.
At the center of EcoCrop Alliance’s work is the belief that care begins with attention, and that attention begins with understanding . By helping land be measured, interpreted, and prepared for future environmental systems, we seek to ensure that nature is not overlooked until loss becomes the only proof of its worth.
We move forward with patience and responsibility, knowing that meaningful change rarely begins with urgency or spectacle, but with the willingness to look closely and stay present. What we choose to notice today shapes what remains possible tomorrow.
